Keeping Ourselves Safe with Constable Wansink

KOS Session 3- Physically Me

Constable Wansink came to Room 9 last week to help us with our learning.

We are learning to use the correct names for the parts of our body.
We talked about some names our families use for the private parts of our bodies. These are ok, but we also have to know the proper names for these parts too.

We read a story about Milly, Molly and Meg. Meg fell off a climbing rope and didn't want to show the Doctor her bottom. Meg's teacher helped her to understand that no one should touch her body unless she wanted them too.

We are learning a lot ab out Keeping Ourselves Safe.

Ice Skating

Today, Room 9 had a turn at Ice Skating on the portable rink in the hall.

Before we went we felt;
"Scared" said Tillie and Adam
"Excited" said Emily and Kealan
"Happy" said Chloe and Kay
"Nervous" said Reuben and Lucy
"Brave" said Dewouh and Riley

Before we could skate we had to learn how to put the skates on.

We had some big kids to help us with skates, helmets and gloves.

They also helped us on the ice while we learnt to get up safely, balance and walk like penguins.

We grooved to some cool music while skating.

We were proud of Bree for showing Commitment today and staying on the ice.

We had a great time Ice Skating today!!

MOTAT Pt 4: Educators Session

We spent time with Educator Melissa in the Discovery room.

We talked about the types of simple machines, how they work and what they can be used for. We thought about places we see these machines in real life.

Nash knew that wheels and axels can be found in cars.
Reuben knew we use wedges to hold a door open or closed.

Then we had some discovery time using different experiments.
We hammered in pegs and joined blocks of wood together. We used pliers and edges to get blocks out and wood apart again.

We built a skateboard using wheels and axels and screws

Then we also tried making a catapult to launch a fluffy pompon using a lever.

Kealan is threading the fulcrum through the supports.

And we built a pulley to lift the teddy bear.

We used cogs to make working gears.

We had an amazing day at MOTAT learning more about simple machines and being able to use our knowledge to make cool machines. Thank you to all our parent helpers. We couldn't go on these trips without you.

MOTAT Pr 3: Machines Exhibition

We came to MOTAT to help with our Science learning in Simple Machines.

We saw examples of the simple machines that we could try.
Tillie was using a wheel and an axel.

Teagan was trying the giant screw.

Emerson played with a pulley.

Dewouh tried using a wedge.

Tiaan used an inclined plane.

Dewouh used a lever.

We also saw some of the machines in action in some cool ways.
Adam used a pulley to pull himself up.

Adam and Chloe used a lever to lift up Mr Maclean.

MOTAT Pt 2: Tram Ride

Our second activity was a ride on the tram. We waited safely on the platform for the tram to arrive.

This tram came from Wellington. The conductor shared some information about MOTAT's trams and answered some of our questions.

We liked how the tram can be driven from both ends of the tram car.

When we got to the end of the line, the conductor took some of his tools to the cabin at the other end and drove the tram from there. We spotted that he was using a lever.

MOTAT Pt1: Treasure Hunt

We started our day at MOTAT with morning tea at the band rotunda. Then we went on a treasure hunt finding awesome exhibits along the way.

We saw the Pumphouse with its burning fires. It was warm in there. We loved the watching the steam coming out.

We went inside an old school house. Keira loved looking inside the old school desk.

We looked inside The Blacksmith's Forge and saw things they would make for horses.

We walked inside the Fire Station and looked at the old Fire Engines.

We looked at Lawyer Cottage in the Historic Village.

And we were amazed by the K900 Locomotive.

Math Learning with Matific

Today we started using an app called Matific.

The app is free to download.  It can also be found via a website. You can find it here. We are currently on a free trial. If it is successful, the subscription fee will come out of the classroom budget.

Today we learned to login with our own username and password.

We played a game that helped us practice our Algebra. We are learning to identify and continue a pattern.

We have another copy of our login details in our notebooks. It would be helpful if you could help your child practice logging in at home.

I would love to hear any feedback on the site. Our free trial ends in a few days I will decide whether  we should continue.

Thanks for your support with this.
