Rainbows

In our Literacy learning we try to find a common theme or topic for our big book, poem, writing and fine motor jobs. This helps us to make connections across different areas of our learning.

This week our topic has been Rainbows to tie into St Patrick's Day.

We read a big book called In the Rain with a rainbow.

Our poem was called Rainbow and we talked about the colours we see and which order they go in.

We also strengthened our fingers by ripping tissue paper to make a rainbow.

Developing our Fine Motor Skills

We wanted to share today's handwriting lesson with you. Handwriting is not just forming letters correctly. It involves strength and dexterity and to help us develop the skills we need to be able to do this, Room 9 has an interesting programme

We start each session by warming up our fingers. Today we sang the Finger song.
Emily is practising touching each finger to her thumbs. This allows us to use our fingers in isolation.

Chloe is twirling her thumb, or Thumbkin as we call it. This strengthens her hands and builds dexterity.
Kobe is threading beads onto a string which develops hand eye co-ordination and helps a correct pencil grip.

After a warm up, we take turns at stations designed to develop our scissor skills, pencil control, letter formation, pencil grip and eye tracking.
Kay is practising the open mouth shape used to make a c, a, d, g, and q.
These activities change to provide variety and maintain interest.
Oscar is working on controlling his pencil by keeping the pencil on the line. He is also practising his correct pencil grip.
We will also practise our letter formations in our handwriting books.
Penelope is demonstrating how to hold our scissors and paper when cutting.

Look out for our names on the wall and the beautiful suns that we made by ripping paper and glueing it on.
